A Tension of Opposites Vols 1 & 2

the Sanguine Penguin Fascinating project. Like taking water and splitting it into its elemental hydrogen and oxygen, OYC has created separate musical worlds. Mr. Horberry’s ‘Vol 1: At Variance’ evokes awakenings and the sun peeking over the horizon at dawn.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Mr. Hulme’s ‘Vol. 2: Into the Pleasure Garden,’ are darker dreamscapes and evoke midnight.
You can hear how these two voices create harmony in other OYC releases, here, though they each have a turn in the spotlig Favorite track: Crosswise.

400 Lonely Things

400 Lonely Things Aptly named and (gorgeously) packaged, the two sides of this cassette couldn't be more different, or more complimentary. Side one is mostly light and warm with an emphasis on shorter tracks, conjuring up the mystical paradise promised by the golden age of the more ethereal Windham Hill cassettes. Side two takes us deep into OYC's long-form nocturnal agenda. By the time the middle passage of "Unfolding" occurs, you will be adrift in space, so pack a lunch Another instant classic.

This is the first in a series of looser exploratory works that allow OYC to expand their musical horizons and release their music more expediently.

A Tension of Opposites was born out of 2020's virus state where both OYC members were left working in isolation. Two types of music emerged spontaneously, and rather than try to combine them OYC decided to present the results separately, two sides of a contrasting whole.

In need of a suitable format and frustrated by their usual lengthy release schedules, OYC returned to the quick and dirty compact cassette – the place they started back in the 80s.

A Tension of Opposites is 'Dirty Ambient', a phrase coined by OYC for the process of working quickly and instinctively, embracing errors and honouring imperfections. It's also a jibe at what is sometimes a hideously manicured genre.
